High Interest in August Nano Workshop

Development of and manufacturing with safer nano molecules is the focus of the workshop in Albany, N.Y., which is the first joint effort of NIOSH's Nanotechnology Research Center and its Prevention through Design program.

INDIANAPOLIS – Several sessions being presented during the AIHce 2012 conference are about safe use of nanotechnology and nanomaterials. Attendees are showing high interest in an Aug. 14-16 workshop to be held at Albany, N.Y.’s College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering, as well, according to Charles L. Geraci, coordinator of the Nanotechnology Research Center and one of three workshop organizers. It is the first joint effort by NRC and another NIOSH unit, the Prevention through Design program, Geraci said June 19.

The workshop has strong support from the private sector. Geraci said his goal was to have a program of private companies’ HSE experts presenting about how they ensure safe use, rather than filling it with NIOSH, OSHA, or EPA presenters, and he said the organizations he approached welcomed the opportunity.

After NIOSH and CNSE officials deliver welcoming remarks on Aug. 14, the program is largely filled with private-sector presenters. These include MaryBeth Miller, principal EHS scientist and chief product stewardship officer for Applied Nanostructured Solutions, A Lockheed Martin Company; and Mark A. Banash, Ph.D., vice president of quality and regulatory affairs for Nanocomp Technologies Inc.

Other participants are from organizations including Cyto Viva Inc., the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute, Goodrich Corp., the AFL-CIO, General Motors, Flow Sciences, 3M, DuPont, Dover Pak Containment Systems, the Purdue University Birck Nanotechnology Center, NIEHS, and the Netherlands Organization for Applied Sciences Research.
